Art Week was a big success!  We kicked it off with a special guest on January 20th.  Every grade level spent some time with Michael P. White in our library.  Mr. White is a children's book illustrator who travels around the country speaking to school groups. He has illustrated The Library Dragon, The Secret of Old Zeb, and Harriet's Horrible Hair Day as well as many others.  He made us laugh while showing us how a story can evolve from a piece of artwork.  At the end of the day, he left our school with some fabulous artwork!   It will be framed and seen around our school.

He even left Mrs. Leonard her very own Library Dragon picture!  Mrs. Duncan received a picture of her favorite thing, a pig!  A big thank you goes out to all the families that have joined PTA!  You made it possible to bring in such a special speaker!  Check out some of the pictures taken by Mrs. Duncan!

Art Week continued Jan. 23-27.  On Monday and Tuesday, artisans from Wired Up Beads introduced the fourth and fifth graders to the art of jewelry making with a Valentine's Day pin project.  On Tuesday afternoon, Judy Mastagni spoke to the kindergartners and third graders about sculpture and art materials.  Finally, on Thursday, graphic artist Jonathon Bone presented some of his fairy tale inspired graphic art for the second and third graders.  He talked to us about "painting" on the computer.  Hopefully the kids are inspired to create their own works of art.  Thanks to Mrs. Duncan for graciously working Art Week into her lesson plans and to Mrs. Leonard for helping with our illustrator day!

Watch D.O.G.S (Dads of Great Students)
The Watch D.O.G.S program is the father involvement initiative of the National Center for Fathering.  The goal of the program is to help every school in America be positively influenced by the committed involvement of fathers and father figures in the lives of their children and students.  The volunteers perform a variety of tasks during their volunteer day, including monitoring the school entrance, assisting with unloading and loading of buses and cars, monitoring the lunch room, and helping in the classroom by working with small groups of students on various tasks.(http://www.fathers.com/watchdogs)

Take a look at the fathers who have volunteered so far for the program.  We appreciate their help and involvement!
